InWonder Woman #19by Tom King and Daniel Sampere, the Sovereign finally ends his story about how Diana defeated him. But the Sovereign takes a dark turn and reveals he’s actually aware of what’s been happening beyond the confines of his cell. This issue provides glimpses of the ‘Wonder War’, a conflict that has led to a massacre of the Amazons.
Not only are Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark, and Yara Flor all dead, but Wonder Woman has been killedas well. Elsewhere, Diana’s future killer, Lyssa is bornto Wonder Woman’s rivalEmelie while kept guarded by Mouseman’s guards.
The Wonder War is Set to Kill Every Amazon Except For Trinity
The Future Looks Grim for Wonder Woman and Her Allies
The story of King and Sampere’sWonder Womanhas been one of her conflict with her newest nemesis, the Sovereign. It was the Sovereign who whipped a frenzy of paranoia and hatred against the Amazons and it was because of him that Wonder Woman became a public enemy. However, Diana resisted everything Sovereign threw at her. Even when he killed Steve Trevor in cold blood, Diana and her allies worked together to take him down. In the end, for all the Sovereign’s power and privilege,Wonder Woman took him down, locking the deposed king up on Paradise Island.
Because Trinity and the Sovereign’s part of the story takes place in the future, the Wonder War has yet to happen. ButWonder Woman #19makes it clear that Diana’s victory over the Sovereign isn’t a permanent one. Lyssa is connected to the former king in some way (as hinted by the red, white, and blue dagger plunged into Diana’s heart), which would make sense as to why he appears to be using Mouseman to keep Lyssa’s existence a secret. Though she’s a baby now,Lyssa will eventually grow up to kill everyone that Wonder Woman loves.

Things look bad right now for the Amazons. While the Sovereign has been removed from power, he’s already got plans in motion to take down everyone who played a part in destroying his rule. The only person who’s able to avoid all this bloodshed is Trinity, and even then, she might not be able to take on someone like Lyssa, who’s strong enough to kill the Amazons. She does have her ‘big brothers’ Batman and Superman on her side, but the Wonder War may be too big for any of them to stop, especially ifWonder Womanfalls.
