Warning! SPOILERS ahead forYellowjacketsseason 3, episode 9, “How The Story Ends!“Yellowjacketsseason 3, episode 9, “How The Story Ends,” has plenty of shocking twists and emotional losses. This is expected from the penultimate episode of the season, but I was disappointed that it left us almost exactly where we started. Though I genuinely didn’t expect the multiple character deaths throughout the episode, the status quo is restored in time for the finale.AfterYellowjacketsseason 3, episode 8scrambled to make sense of the new characters and the possibility of rescue, episode 9 makes it clear that the show has been grasping at straws all season.
At this point,we know that it’s never a good sign when one of the Yellowjackets gets a visit from their younger selves, and “How The Story Ends” kicks off with Van looking herself in the eye. From there, the rather disgusting conflict we left off on between adult Shauna and Melissa picks back up, allowing Melanie Lynskey to spend the rest of the episode splattered with blood. There are fun elements in the episode, butYellowjacketsdoesn’t let us sit with the tension it created in episode 9.

Though Yellowjackets Always Packs A Punch, It’s Clear The Show Is Going In Circles
With One Episode Left In Season 3, There’s A Lot To Uncover
Even when everyone was getting excited throughout “A Normal, Boring Life,“I never believed the Yellowjackets were going home. However, I didn’t expect Shauna to stop caring about everyone completely. If teen Shauna thinks that all she needs is a gun and some mean words to control the whole group, she’s likely in for a rude awakening in the season finale.Yellowjacketsseason 3 has been teasing a showdown between Shauna and Nat for a long time, but I’m not sure ifYellowjacketswill be able to deliver the payoff we’ve been waiting for with just one episode left.
I’m starting to suspect thatYellowjacketsdoesn’t have any more insight into the inner workings of the wilderness and the truth of its supernatural power than I do.Yellowjackets' confusion over where it’s going is reflected in Shauna’s arc of paranoia and violence that we’ve been watching for several seasons. I suppose it doesn’t matter if it’s the wild or the animal inside these women that’s controlling them, as the result seems to be death and destruction no matter what. It always seemed like a supernatural force, but guessing feels pointless whenYellowjacketskeeps flipping the script on its conceit.

Melissa’s confirmed betrayal, coupled with Callie and Jeff’s conversation, might bring Shauna to her breaking point.
The final confrontation between Melissa and Van was interesting because it opened my eyes to the fact that Melissa was likely playing with Shauna in the last episode. Melissa’s confirmed betrayal, coupled with Callie and Jeff’s conversation, might bring Shauna to her breaking point. I’m hoping the final episode will give Jeff the opportunity to confront Shauna and even leave her. At this point, Shauna has few reasons left not to let herself off the leash and become the person we’ve been waiting for. Maybe that’s what the wilderness wanted all along.
Joel McHale was wasted in his brief stinton the show. I understand why the series didn’t want to trade one male authority figure for another, but I don’t know why he and the other dead scientist were introduced in the first place. So many new, exciting elements are added just to be taken away, and season 3 has only exacerbated this issue. There was a callback to the earlier seasons that I appreciated. I was starting to get worried the plane’s black box would be forgotten. However, this is a band-aid on the large cracks appearing all season.
Another One Of The Yellowjackets’s Story Has Ended, So Where Do We Go From Here?
One Murder Still Needs Solving, But We’re All Too Aware Of Who Committed The Most Recent One
The wilderness, orthe Yellowjackets themselves, won’t be satisfied until everyone who was out there is gone. This is my major takeaway from “How The Story Ends,” based on the fact that both Van and Lottie have been killed off this season. Those who remain — Tai, Shauna, Melissa, and Misty — have all been more than willing to give the wild the sacrifices it has been waiting for. Though Misty has been the sleeper-sane character of season 3, now that Nat has discovered teen Misty’s secret in the wild, things won’t be going well for her.
We’ll likely get back into the swing of things in the season finale with all the characters grieving, angry, and ready to take their feelings out on whoever’s closest. I could see Shauna and Tai hunting for Melissa together, or even a last-second reveal that it was Walter who killed Lottie, as his brief interaction with Misty hinted at in “How The Story Ends.” I’m used to characters being on the chopping block inYellowjackets, but I was still happy to be surprised throughout the episode, even if I’m not sure where the final episode will take me.
Yellowjacketsairs weekly each Friday at 3 AM EST/12 AM PST on Paramount+ and on Sundays at 8 PM EST/5 PM PST on Showtime.
